Press Release – Sherry Vaught Slams Jim Jordan for Neglecting Constituents

Mansfield, Ohio, Mayoral Candidate Sherry Vaught Slams Congressman Jim Jordan for Neglecting Constituents in Pursuit of Partisan Agendas and Personal Political Gain

MANSFIELD, OHIO — 10/05/2023 — Sherry Vaught, the Democratic candidate for Mayor of Mansfield, issued a scathing critique today of Republican Congressman Jim Jordan as he seeks the House Speakership for his persistent neglect of the needs and concerns of Mansfield residents and willful damage to the country. Vaught accused Jordan of prioritizing a performative partisan agenda over the well-being of the people and communities he was elected to represent.

Vaught, a dedicated public school teacher of 25 years with a ground level view of her community, expressed her deep concern for the residents of Mansfield who have been let down by their current Congressman, directly and indirectly. She emphasized the need for elected officials to put the interests of their constituents ahead of political grandstanding, to seek to unite the country in good will rather than divide it.

“It’s clear that Congressman Jim Jordan is out of touch with the people of Mansfield, the people of Ohio” stated Sherry Vaught. “While he’s busy scoring points in political theater and pursuing partisan agendas, the people are struggling with real issues right here at home.”

Vaught highlighted several key areas where Congressman Jordan’s inaction and partisan rhetoric have directly harmed the people of Mansfield:

Economic Recovery: Jordan’s failure to support meaningful economic relief during and after the COVID-19 pandemic has left many Mansfield families struggling to make ends meet. “Failing to extend the Child Tax Credit, that was unconscionable. That had helped so many families, lifted so many children out of poverty. Children in poverty, in the United States, it’s unacceptable.” Vaught stated. Sherry Vaught pledged to focus on local economic recovery and investing in people.

Infrastructure: While Jordan has been more interested in political fights than investing in critical infrastructure projects in Ohio. “Politicians love to campaign on infrastructure, every candidate here including me is talking about infrastructure. But Democrats actually did it in 2021 passing huge investments to repair and rebuild this country. Where was Jim Jordan?”

Education: Vaught criticized Jordan for not adequately supporting local schools and failing to address the pressing educational needs of Mansfield’s children. She emphasized again the impact of COVID in disrupting education and the failure of politicians in Columbus and Washington to seriously address it, preferring performative and outrageous arguments about masks and vaccines causing magnetism or attempts to politicize schools and ban books. As a teacher, Sherry saw firsthand how, “We lost some of the most important months for schooling.” While she acknowledged the difficulty of making decisions in a crisis, she argued not enough had been done to help students in the aftermath.

While a failure to act is one thing, Jim Jordan has actively undermined the rule of law and cultivated a culture of hatred, vitriol, and division. “We need empathy in our politics, tolerance. Strong communities and strong countries are built by bringing people together, not forcing them apart,” Sherry said. Jordan stirs up hatred from the seat of government because it gets him air time. It erodes trust, breaks down the ties that bind society together, it trickles down and creates a harder, colder, dehumanizing culture for all of us.To Sherry Vaught, this is totally unacceptable, it is wrong. And this is why she felt compelled to speak against Jim Jordan in this moment where it might be heard. Sherry added, “there are good candidates, like Tamie Wilson, who I believe can be a partner and a fighter for Mansfield in Congress.”

Sherry Vaught concluded her statement by vowing to be a Mayor who prioritizes the needs of Mansfield residents, dedicated to rebuilding a sense of trust, of community, of Mansfield. “The people of Mansfield deserve leaders who will work tirelessly on their behalf, not one who uses their position for personal political gain,” she declared. Vaught acknowledged the irony of attacking her congressman for performative partisanship while by all appearances doing the same by attacking him, “But at some point enough is enough, lives are on the line. This isn’t a game.”

As the campaign for Mayor of Mansfield continues, Sherry Vaught remains committed to a message of unity, progress, and a focus on the real issues facing the community. She invites all Mansfield residents to join her in working towards a brighter future for the city.
